NEW DEMOCRATIC DANCE PARTY
The New Democratic Dance Party is pleased to announce our first event on January 5th, 2013 at The Fall Tattooing and Artists Gallery in downtown Vancouver, B.C.
The New Democratic Dance Party (NDDP) is an experimental initiative that seeks to (re)define and enhance the local arts and grassroots community. Fusing dance-culture with direct democratic process, we hope to fund substantial, meaningful and relevant community projects – and it’s you who gets to decide which project is funded! Upon arriving to an NDDP event, your $20 admission fee becomes your ballot. At the event, projects are presented and then voted on. Once the votes are counted, the NDDP awards the pooled admissions fees as a grant to the project that receives the most votes from the event attendees.
In selecting the four finalists out of a competitive and inspiring list of applications, we looked for projects that were innovative and well thought out, with a high likelihood of being substantially funded and with a long duration. The four finalists for the first event are, in alphabetical order:
1. Cocreatrix is a map based social navigator that aims to use online technology to facilitate interactions in real life. It is an accessible, open-source database of resources where people can share and exchange skills, knowledge, creative work, passions and dreams.
2. Growing Young Farmers is a school program on Vancouver Island that aims to change and supplement the BC curriculum with courses on the principles and practices of producing local organic food. GYF will begin to deliver the food-growing program to grade 4 classes at elementary schools in Sidney, BC.
3. Submerged Studios is an underground arts and music venue in Vancouver. At a time where there is a crisis for community space in this city, Submerged hopes to fund their renovations and re-zoning so that they can continue to operate.
4. Unity Mural Project will involve several artists who collaborate to envision a mural on a large 30-ft wall on the side of Unity Yoga at Commercial Drive and 10th Avenue in Vancouver. The theme of the painting will be “West Coast Culture” in all its richness and diversity.
We are also excited to announce and thank our lineup of local talent, who have volunteered their skills as a form of contribution to this project: That African, Apple Cat, Fritz the Cat, Briden, Commoddity, Rich Gaud and Jonny Dubs on music; Heidrogen and Sebnem on Visuals, and Luciterra as the evening’s performance.
We want to emphasize that the New Democratic Dance Party relies on active participation, and feedback. We value transparency, collaboration, outrageous and courageous ideas, and enthusiastic selflessness.
The NDDP mission is highly experimental, but the founders expect that this cultural experiment will bring out creativity in all who participate, strengthen and deepen bonds – personal and professional – that already exist within the community, and expand the community beyond its accepted boundaries. To understand more about the NDDP and the way it works, please visit NDDP.CA or show up to our first event to see for yourselves how it unfolds.
See you there,
The New Democratic Dance Party
